Justice Denied: A Personal Perspective

Margie Yamamoto

Speaker’s Parents leaving Terminal Island

On Wednesday, October 2nd, Margie Yamamoto told a story everyone needs to hear.  Margie joined SSILL and the Guilford Library to tell the story of the Japanese incarceration during World War II as seen through the eyes of her Japanese American family.

The photographs she shared were stunning and her talk was riveting. Margie was the only one of her siblings  born in the United States and at the age of two months she and her entire family were deported to overcrowded detention camps.

Her story is a testament to her father’s stubborn refusal to be defeated. Margie knows that Asian-American discrimination still exists today, so she remains an active member, and co-president of the New England Chapter of the Japanese American Citizens League, a national human rights and educational organization that works to celebrate Japanese life and culture.
