Know us before you need us: Hospice and Palliative Care 101

On Tuesday, October 8th Susan Daniels, MSN, RN, CHPN, addressed a large audience on the benefits of both Palliative Care and Hospice Care offered by Middlesex Health.

She described in detail the many types of wholistic support they offer to both caregivers and their ill loved ones.  Susan explained that both the Palliative and Hospice services are provided by a team of various professionals, so all the many needs of a patient are addressed. Who is on the Hospice team, for example?
• Nurses
• Providers (Doctors, ARPN)
• Spiritual & bereavement counselors
• Social workers
• Home Health Aides
• Volunteers

Susan encouraged people to volunteer as caregivers.  This may mean visiting a patient who is isolated at home or someone in hospital care.  She described her personal feeling that there is something very meaningful and beautiful about being with a person as they face end of life realities. In answer to several Medicare questions following the presentation, Susan explained that Medicare primarily supports in home care.
