Dr. Lauren Price & Corp. Jason Frey

On April 7th, SSILL welcomed Dr. Lauren Price and Corporal Jason Frey to talk about a very special topic for dog lovers.  Dr. Price owns the Clinton Veterinary Hospital and Corporal Frey is with the K-9 Division of the Clinton Police Department.  Dr. Price began the program by talking about the structure of a dog’s nasal anatomy that allows for its unique sense of smell.

She explained that there are distinct types of working dogs.  For example, there are Medical Detection Dogs.  These dogs are trained to detect cancer, diabetes issues, and seizures.  Dogs with longer snouts are typically better working dogs because they have a better sense of smell than smaller dogs.  Corporal Frey talked about the work he does with the K-9 dogs.  The two dogs that were introduced were both German Shepherds.  Sonny, (not shown) is now retired, and Monte (below) is now working as a narcotics detection dog.

Both dogs are highly trained and work with Corporal Frey as a team.  The team is an award winning team in Connecticut for their success in narcotics detection.  With Monte’s participation, Corporal Frey demonstrated how the dog goes about detecting a narcotic that was hidden in the room.

It was truly a fascinating thing to see.   One member exclaimed “this was an amazing, amazing experience.  I learned so much about the dog’s olfactory senses”!
