Elaine Jackson – A Long Time SSILL Member
We are grateful for our long time members.
Here we feature
Elaine Jackson
who joined SSIL in 2009.
When Elaine retired from teaching foreign languages at Wolcott High School she moved to Madison with her ninety-year old mother. We were interested in talking to Elaine to find out exactly what it is that has kept her a loyal member for all these years. When asked this question, Elaine stated that her favorite part of the SSILL organization is “the diversity of offerings”.
Elaine is interested in history, science, the environment, art and music, and anything related to health care. Many of SSILL’s programs provide education on these topics. She believes that SSILL is the “gem of the Shoreline”. Elaine said that one of the highlights of the summer is receiving the catalog in August for the fall programs. She says “it kind of gives you that exciting feeling of going back to school”. Elaine is an educator, having taught Italian and Spanish at Guilford Community Center for nine years.
When asked about how she thinks SSILL can expand the membership, she advises to “encourage your younger neighbors” as the programs are stress free and they always provide a Q & A. She said she has learned a lot from the Q & A portion of the programs. Elaine agrees with the famous artist, Michelangelo who at the age of 87, said “Ancora Imaparo”, translation “I am still learning”. He further stated “The wise man knows that he knows nothing”.
