SHARKS IN LONG ISLAND SOUND

On October 28th, SSILL welcomed the return of MaryEllen Mateleska, Senior Director for Education and Conservation at the Mystic Aquarium.  MaryEllen provided an enlightening talk about sharks in general, including the different types of sharks, their life-cycle, and behaviors.
She explained that sharks are not particularly interested in humans, and some of the fears we have of them are are based on myths.  MaryEllen turned the focus of the discussion to the Sharks we have in our waters of Long Island Sound.  These sharks include the Sand Tiger Shark, Dusky Shark, Smooth Dogfish, Spiny Dogfish, and the Sandbar Shark. MaryEllen also explained that other shark species, some times come into the Sound to feed.
