Katherine Meier, Primatologist
SSILL welcomed Katherine Meier on Tuesday,
April 8th to talk about her research in the swamps, forests, and wetlands in Indonesia and Africa. Katherine is currently a Phd candidate at Yale University.
Katherine’s area of study is an interdisciplinary one, Anthropology combined with Environmental Studies.
Katherine is a Primatologist, however, in her quest to study primates, she has also studied the swamps, forests and wetlands of these exotic areas, and has gained some remarkable knowledge of all aspects of life in these parts of the world. Katherine has studied lemurs in Madagascar and orangutans in Indonesia. Her slides and videos were fascinating. The living conditions (including camping in swamps, consuming insects and working in conditions that many of us would deem inhospitable) were truly amazing. One SSILL member exclaimed, “Peat Swamp Forests! We are apes! Your research is fascinating and thrilling!” Another stated, “She really did a wonderful job of connecting the various issues into a coherent presentation. Well done!”
