Carl Zimmer

On December 10th, SSILL welcomed  Carl Zimmer, an award-winning New York Times columnist and author to speak to the membership about the dangers in the air that we breathe. The program was one of the most highly attended events of the semester.

This is not surprising given the COVID pandemic that we recently experienced. Carl went through some history of airborne diseases and provided information on the scientists who made important discoveries for the benefit of public health. It was a fascinating talk and provoked many questions from the audience. One member stated “such a wonderful speaker who was able to share so much information on this all important topic, his explanations were easy to understand, and I learned so much about the history of this body of science”. Carl has written several books on this topic and related topics. Carl has a new book coming out in Feburary of 2025 entitled “Air-Borne – The Hidden History of the Life we Breathe”.
